Midsummer Night's Dream

Eleven members of the senior group performed their take on A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the woodland at Powis Castle on 3rd and 4th September. It was titled ‘A Dream in the Wild Wood’ and took place as the summer project performance, rehearsed intensively over a period of ten days, and performed to an audience total in excess of 300. It was also the final project by the three year 13 members who are now going forward to work or … Continue reading

Royal Wedding Workshop

We have been invited by Welshpool Town Council, in conjunction with the National Trust, to provide a one hour workshop at Powis Castle on April 29th. We will be a small part of a huge celebration up at the castle, which includes all sorts of activities and events – all free of charge. If you would like to come along and watch – or even take part in – our workshop, we will be on the Great Lawn at the … Continue reading

Sponsored Improvisation

On Monday 18th April we held our 12 hour sponsored improvisation fundraising event at the Corn Exchange, Welshpool Town Hall. Nineteen members of MYT attended from both senior and intermediate groups, and my thanks go out to them all for their enthusiasm and dedication. Their efforts will help to keep the cost of weekly sessions to a minimum, as well as enabling us to subsidise various projects and events. The day was a huge success, and many friends and parents … Continue reading

Street Theatre

On Saturday 12th February Montgomeryshire Youth Theatre performed some of the scenes from their upcoming production of Constable Jones’ Journal as street theatre. Constable Jones’ Journal is a play that has been devised and written by the Senior group of MYT, and tells broadly of local attitudes when The Montgomeryshire Constabulary was established in 1841. Constable Jones really did exist and had to tackle all types of crime – from a stolen boar to the body of the bargeman who was found … Continue reading

And it's goodbye from her…

The Masque of Deception (see below) was my final production, as I have now passed the directorship of the youth theatre into the more-than-capable hands of Penny Jones, who is now running the organisation, ably assisted by Lucy French. After 28 years, leaving will inevitably leave a huge gap in my life (Wednesday evenings will never be the same…) but I have over a quarter of a century of vivid memories of all the work we created together, the friendship of so … Continue reading

News of past and future events

Peer Gynt’s return to Welshpool in April was a very happy occasion, for cast and audiences, which came in large numbers over three nights to see the first production which brought together both senior and intermediate groups. (An earlier youth theatre production of the play was staged in the later 1980s, before any of the 2010 cast were born.)This kind of large-scale ensemble work, spiced with strong individual performances, is what the youth theatre has become known for, and from … Continue reading

Summer Project Success

The youth theatre rounded off its busy year with a successful tour of The Masque of Deception. Cathryn, Amy, Chloe, Tom, Ffion, Harriet and Jacob worked on this adaptation of some of the short stories of Edgar Allan Poe, which Ginny had scripted. This dark, atmospheric piece of theatre was toured to Hirnant, Llandinam, Montgomery and Welshpool, with full houses of very appreciative audiences at the three smaller venues, and an even larger one (in numbers) at Theatr Clera.
