History

A Brief History
Since it was founded (as North Powys Youth Theatre) in 1983, MYT has

  • Performed in theatres, streets, village halls and schools, from
  • Edinburgh to Penybontfawr and Stockholm, via Liverpool and Birmingham;
  • Represented Powys with performances and exhibition in the Millenium Dome;
  • Pioneered innovative joint creative projects with groups in Sweden – the SWELSH connection;
  • Performed by invitation at the National Theatre in London;
  • Organised and run festivals, specialist workshops and collaborative projects, in schools and the community, for young people from the ages of 5 to 18+;
  • Staged a great variety of major productions, from devised work to plays by the international “greats” …. Shakespeare, Brecht, Ibsen, Thomas, Buchner ……. and many others;
  • Established training programmes for youth theatre workshop leaders, and employed them;
  • Gained an award for Excellence in Youth Work;
  • Provided the first step on the career ladder which leads to top drama colleges and theatre-allied professions for many members – and many of them come back to share their skills with the coming MYT generation.
